Project Final Conference

Official Statistics in the Service of Society, Danas Conference Center Belgrade, June 21, 2011

The results of implementing the project ‘Improving Structural Capacity of the Serbian Statistical Office in view of approximating European Statistical System (ESS) requirements’ were presented. The EU-funded project which started on 2 February 2009 and ends on 1 August 2011 has a project budget amounting to EUR 1.8 million.

The conference was opened by Mr José Gomez Gomez, Delegation of the EU to the Republic of Serbia, Mr Dragan Vukmirović, PhD, Director of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia and the President of the company that is in the lead of the implementing consortium, Mr. Dimitris Bakolas, PhD, European Profiles S.A agenda.

The establishment of an effective and sustainable statistical system with the purpose of producing statistics necessary for policy-making, planning, monitoring and carrying out the process of transition and reform is defined within the Stabilisation and Accosiation Agreement as one priority area of cooperation between the EC and Serbia. The overall objective of the project is to assist in this process by supporting the approximation of the Serbian Statistical System to the ESS's requirements. The project is made up of four development components:

  • Infrastructure for producing National Accounts
  • Preparation of an Agricultural Census in 2012
  • Upgrading of the ICT system, and
  • Developing communication and dissemination.

Around 60 representatives from followed the conference proceedings.

The attendees had the opportunity to be informed about the main results of the project of which one is the  important introduction in Serbia of Supply and Use Tables and regional breakdowns of Gross Domestic Product. It was further communicated that thanks to the development work conducted under the second component, the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (SORS) is well prepared to conduct an Agricultural Census in Serbia in 2012. The most recent one was conducted in 1960.

SORS receives also technical assistance in the field of ICT that in the prolongation will lead to a more effective and efficient statistical production environment. Also thanks to the project, SORS has a new website since February 2011 which is in congruence with EU Member States’ practice contains public statistical databases that improves the availability of official statistics for the Serbian government, national and international stakeholders and the public in general.

The ICT Strategy seminar, 16th September 2010

The seminar took place at SORS on 16 September. After an introduction delivered by Mr Miroljub Kostić, Assistant Director, ICT and Publishing Department, the KE,Mr Karlis Zeila, and the SSTEs, Mr Photis Nanopoulos and Mr Georgios Pavlidis, made seven presentations in accordance with the agenda.

Around 40 managers, IT staff, statisticians and administrators participated in the seminar. After the seminar, questions were put and the project experts clarified a few issues.

Following the seminar, the KE, discussed the way forward concerning the ICT Policy development with the SSTEs.  It was agreed that the ICT Policy document should comprise several policies, for example a migration policy and a security policy. At the first ICT WG meeting, the KE explained the role of the ICT Policy, its structure and development methodology. A draft list of policy documents was presented and agreed on the mission summing-up meeting. The KE also discussed the ICT Policy work approach.photo gallery


Opening Workshop: Towards Agricultural Census 2011
In the Republic of Serbia,
25th September 2009, Belgrade

The opening workshop “Towards agricultural census in the Republic of Serbia” mutually organized by European Profiles S.A. and consortium and the Statistics Office of the Republic of Serbia in the scope of IPA Project “Development of administrative capacities of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia regarding fulfilment of the European statistical system requests”. The seminar was held in Belgrade on September 25th 2009.

The purpose of the seminar was to inform expert and general public about the planned and conducted activities regarding harmonization of agricultural statistics with European and international standards and recommendations. The central point of the mentioned activities relates to the forthcoming Agricultural Census.

Based on main findings of the assessment conducted so far, the opening workshop, presented a review of the current situation emphasising specific areas that need to be addressed in the organisation and conduct of the agricultural census, the already undertaken steps on preparing the census methodological tools and the further main activities envisaged up to the end of the project.

This is a complex activity and its realization demands involvement of all segments of the society. photo gallery
